Serial number tracking records the individual identifier of each unit, so a specific physical item can be traced from the supplier who sent it to the customer who bought it.

Electronics and mobile retail run on this. When a laptop comes back under warranty, the serial is what proves when it was sold and which supplier it came from, and it is the difference between a vendor claim and a write off.
An example
A laptop comes back eleven months after sale. Searching the serial shows it was received in a consignment from a specific distributor in October, sold in November with a one year warranty, and is therefore a vendor claim rather than a write off.

Does every item need a serial number?
No, and forcing it where it does not belong slows the counter down. Serials earn their place on high value items with warranties, such as electronics and appliances, while consumables are better tracked by batch or not at all.
