What is SKU?

A SKU is the unique code for one sellable thing: one product in one variant, size or configuration. Two colours of the same shirt are two SKUs, because they are counted, priced and reordered separately.

In Bangladesh

Shops that trade on item names alone hit the wall when the same item arrives from two suppliers with two spellings. SKU discipline is usually the first real work in any stock migration.

An example

A shop stocks the same shirt in three sizes and two colours. That is six SKUs. Counted as one item called "shirt", the stock figure is meaningless and the reorder is a guess.

In SORS ERP

Items in SORS ERP carry variants, attributes, attribute sets, brands, units and packages, with barcode templates and bulk barcode generation so a SKU has a scannable code from day one.

How do I decide what is a separate SKU?

If two things are counted, priced or reordered separately, they are separate SKUs. In practice that means size, colour, capacity and pack size usually create their own SKU, while a supplier's internal code does not.
